Blocked Drains

Blocked drains are not uncommon.

As a local plumber, we know that around Bondi and across the majority of the Sydney metro area, our stormwater and drainage infrastructure needs to be updated or replaced — especially the decaying pre-war clay pipework. As a result, many Sydney residents are experiencing repetitive drainage issues such as:

  • Plumbing infiltration and damage caused by tree roots.
  • Blocked pipes caused by build–up of foreign matter such as fats, oils and sanitary items.
  • Plumbing pipes collapsing due to old age and water pressure.

The best advice we can give customers is to resolve the issue as soon as it starts, as the longer you leave the plumbing problem the more costly it becomes.

How do tree roots damage drainage?

The main cause of domestic blocked drains is tree roots. The thinnest crack in your pipe is all a tree requires to infiltrate your pipe system with its hair line end roots. Getting access into your plumbing pipe is like finding a gold mine for these roots.

Once they have discovered the source, they spread thickly down the pipe to create a dam effect which will block your pipework and back-up into your property… all the way up to your toilet. The roots will also damage the pipe as it causes a crack, which widens with the pressure from the root growth.

How do we fix a Plumbing Pipe Blockage?

Plunging is the first way we attempt to clear a blockage or blocked drain.

When this is not effective, the best way to clear a blockage permanently is to feed specialised CCTV camera apparatus down the drain to identify the cause such as tree roots, a collapsed drain, or blockage caused by other foreign items.

The plumber can see everything on his screen, which is linked to the CCTV. He will then provide the customer with a detailed written report and a DVD recording of his findings (please request this before CCTV service commences).

Once the blockage has been assessed, we will know exactly where the plumbing issue is located, and the most effective entry point to feed in our high–pressure jetting equipment to clear the blocked drain. The jetters our plumbers use operate with such power, that they can cut through tree roots and other debris such as food, oil, sanitary products, plants and soils.

Repeat Blockages

If you are finding that your drains block up 3-6 months after they have been cleared, you should consider investing in a long-term plumbing solution. The next step is to either replace, reline or patch the pipework.

Relining and Patching

This solution causes the least disruption to the property owners’ plumbing. It only requires one access point though which the repair can be completed. We offer this in–house service, which keeps costs down… unlike other plumbing businesses who have to outsource this work to contractors.

PVC Replacement

The second option is to excavate the surface above the area where the blocked drain reoccurs and replace the section requiring attention. This is sometimes the preferred plumbing option when the location is under soft landscaping.
